Soul Fusion: Out of Nowhere
Imagine there was a card like Cyber Dragon, but instead of having 2100 ATK it had 2600 ATK. Or consider Mystical Space Typhoon if it could also destroy monster cards. Then think of a really cool Dinosaur-type wearing armor and a sweet pair of purple shorts.
Now take all those cards and put them together, into one high-Level Dinosaur-type with big Attack Points, a free Special Summon ability, and an effect that can destroy any card on the field.
Meet Dinowrestler Pankratops.
If your opponent controls more monsters than you do, you can Special Summon Dinowrestler Pankratops from your hand. That’s a lot like Cyber Dragon, but you trade the support of the “Cyber Dragon” family for raw power: a beefy 2600 ATK. In the past year we’ve seen Duelists use cards like Cyber Dragon, Mekk-Knight Blue Sky, and Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall to Special Summon more firepower, and for good reason: more attackers means more chances to destroy the monsters your opponent relies on, and more opportunities to deal damage. Pankratops beats all of those cards on sheer attack.
Next up, Dinowrestler Pankratops has a Quick Effect that lets you Tribute a “Dinowrestler” monster, then targets a card your opponent controls to destroy it. Soul Fusion introduces five Dinowrestlers plus a fantastic Field Spell that changes the shape of battle, buffs your Dinowrestlers, and Special Summons them from your Deck. So if you want to build a full Dinowrestler Deck you can totally do that, and you’ll have lots of options for what to Tribute. You could destroy a card with Pankratops every turn.
But you can also Tribute Dinowrestler Pankratops for its own effect, destroying any opposing card you want, whenever you want to. That means you can Summon it or attack with it, see if your opponent has a response, and Tribute Pankratops to destroy a card if things don’t go your way. It also means you can use Dinowrestler Pankratops in almost any Deck you play, and that’s going to make it a huge hit in tournament competition.
Since Dinowrestler Pankratops is so flexible you can Side Deck it in almost any strategy. But you might even want to Main Deck it, especially if you plan to let your opponent play first in the majority of your Duels.
We’ve seen that “go-second” approach work for a number of high-powered decks that specialize in disrupting your opponent and then breaking their board so you can try to win the Duel early. Those decks often use cards like Evenly Matched, Infinite Impermanence, and Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to survive their opponent’s first turn, and then fight back with cards like Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju and Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju to Tribute away problem-monsters. They often use Raigeki and Dark Hole to wipe the whole field, too.
Dinowrestler Pankratops fits those strategies really well, giving you another advantage for going second, and rewarding you with more attack power and a flexible effect that can remove problem cards. If your opponent’s relying on a Continuous Trap that limits your moves – stuff like Gozen Match, Rivalry of Warlords, or Mistake – then Dinowrestler Pankratops is a great answer. If they have a monster with a strong controlling ability or they’ve established an Extra Link, Pankratops can solve that problem too: you can attack a key monster, Tribute Pankratops to free things up, or both.
Some of the strongest strategies in Dueling today seek to build big fields that limit your options. In some cases those Decks can even lock you out of the Duel completely. Dinowrestler Pankratops is a versatile answer to those situations, and it’s another leg up for strategies that choose to play second. Watch for it to be one of the most sought-after new cards out of Soul Fusion, out October 19th!
